Critical Dialogic Accounting and Accountability Workshop

Thur October 12, 2023 — Fri October 13, 2023

Over the past two decades, Dialogic accounting research has steadily grown into a distinct field of research. There now exist a wide range of theories, methods and applications, available to researchers to help them identify marginalised perspectives, engage with power, surface tensions and analyse conflict in their work. However, as the field continues to develop, there is a growing need to recognise the different pathways in which this field is developing. In this workshop, we aim to discuss these various streams of research to map the field as part of a collaborative dialogue.

These discussions will be designed as a welcoming space for everyone from Masters students to Emeritus professors, those who have published on the topic and those who simply want to learn more. Efforts are also being made to make this event accessible to online participants. This means all are welcome to attend and participation will be encouraged.
De plus, il s’agira d’un événement bilingue, ce qui signifie que les invités doivent s’attendre à ce que certaines sessions se déroulent en français.

Workshops (ENG)

The workshops will each focus on a specific theme and will be associated with a particular journal article. Their purpose is to provide a practical forum where attendees can gain knowledge and experience, which they can apply to their own research. The hosts of each workshop have been carefully chosen for their expertise on the topic and their relationship to the associated article. As a result, they can provide insights on the topic, the content of the article and the publication process.

Workshop #1

Discourse Analysis
Host: Matias LAINE

Workshop #2

Q methodology
Host: Matthew SOROLA

Workshop #3

Agonistic Engagement
Host: Helen TREGIDGA

This session will aim to chart out the various types of research that are considered under the umbrella of CDAA. Specific attention will be given to early works in dialogic accounting (Bebbington et al., 2007) the motifs of critical dialogic accounting in Brown (2009) and the mapping of CDAA research in Manetti et al. (2021). The panel will also be asked to provide their thoughts on the development of key areas in CDAA research, such as the recent move towards accountability (Dilard & Vinnari, 2019) and identify areas of commonality and divergence between different approaches to CDAA research.

Host: Richard JABOT
Co-Host: Matthew SOROLA
Panellists: Jesse DILLARD, Matias LAINE, Helen TREGIDGA, Ian THOMSON

In this session, the aim will be to identify the different ways in which conflict is currently identified and understood in CDAA research, while also recognizing potential shortcomings and thinking about advances that can be made in future research. This means the panellists will be asked about their views on why it matters how conflict is conceptualised in CDAA research, as well as their own understandings of dialogic theory, critical theory and agonistic democratic theory as they relate to CDAA research (Tweedie, 2020). Distinctions may be made between inter/intra-organisational and inter/intra-personal conflict. Furthermore, this discussion will look to address shortcomings in the way conflict is currently conceptualised (Brown & Tregidga, 2017), and theories or approaches that have yet to be engaged (for example, theorists with non-Westernized views on conflict and democratic change: Sauerbronn et al., 2021; Seny Kan et al., 2021).

Host: Helen TREGIDGA
Co-Host: Matthew SOROLA
Panellists: Colin DEY, Fernanda Filgueiras SAUERBRON, Konan SENY KAN (online), Stewart SMYTH, Eija VINNARI

After having discussed many of the ways in which CDAA research is constructed, this panel will focus on the limits of its potential (or current framing). In considering what CDAA research can and cannot accomplish, panellists will also be asked to consider alternate areas of research that can help researchers expand beyond its current applications, or perhaps help develop new questions?

Host: Matias LAINE
Co-Host: Richard JABOT
Panellists: Colin DEY, Jesse DILLARD, Stewart SMYTH, Ian THOMSON, Eija VINNARI

Host: Maxence POSTAIRE
Co-Host: Matthew SOROLA
Panellists: Pascale CHATEAU-TERRISSE, Yves GENDRON, Konan SENY KAN, Emmanuelle NEGRE, Marie Anne VERDIER
